In the EMDR Basic Training, you learned how to apply the standard EMDR protocol with clients suffering from post-traumatic stress (PTS).

This EMDR Advanced Training takes your skills to the next level. You will learn how to use EMDR effectively for more complex cases and for disorders other than PTSD.

After completing this training, you will be able to:

  1. How to prepare your client for trauma treatment.
  2. Apply the different ‘routes’ of trauma-sensitive case conceptualization.
  3. Use EMDR in the treatment of complex PTSD whereby dissociation often occurs.
  4. Work with Cognitive Interweaves to overcome treatment impasses.
  5. Apply Resource Development and Installation (RDI) – a stabilization technique

Who can apply?

This training is intended for clinicians who:

  • Have completed a VEN-accredited EMDR Basic Training, and
  • Possess a supervision assessment form, signed by a certified EMDR supervisor.

Participation is unfortunately not possible without this form.

What you will learn

In this advanced course, you will learn how EMDR can be effectively applied to other psychological disorders, particularly when evidence-based treatments have not produced sufficient results. You will explore:

  • Which conceptualization routes best fit different types of problems, enabling you to identify the most relevant memories for EMDR (or other interventions such as Imaginal Exposure).
  • How to apply these routes efficiently and integrate them into ongoing treatments, often in combination with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Schema Focussed Therapy or Emotion Focused Therapy for individuals.

Complex PTSD

When working with complex PTSD, special attention is given to:

  • The treatment of Complex PTSD and EMDR’s specific role in it.
  • The balance between stabilization and trauma processing.
  • Clustering and sequencing traumatic memories to determine an effective order of processing.
  • Managing obstacles such as looping, blocking, dissociation, or emotional flooding.

Good to know


Throughout the training, key techniques such as Cognitive Interweaves are demonstrated and practiced, helping you respond effectively to any stagnation in the processing phase.
